The saga
Episodes
Five seasons, one lifetime. Each season walks Aman through a different tradition of Nepal's myths, and leaves him older and harder to fool.
Season 1 · Newar folklore & the Puranas · Kathmandu Valley to Gosaikunda
Seven Days
Nani has seven days before the goddess inside her burns her out. Aman carries her north through Lakhey, Khyak, Gurumapa, Naga kings and the Eight Mothers, to the lake where Shiva cooled the poison.
Day 0
The Exile
10 pages
Twelve years ago, Aman, the fearless mortal champion of the yaksha legions, burned a valley, then turned his mace on the army that hired him. Now, on the night of Indra Jatra, serpents and yakshas rise from the river for the cast-out living goddess, and the exile stops hiding.
Days 1–2
The Eight Mothers
8 pages
To leave the Valley, Aman and Nani must pass the gates of the Ashta Matrika. Brahmayani tests the former goddess's pride, Chamunda tests the exile's rage, yaksha hunters come out of the dark, and Padmini is never far behind.
Day 3
Taudaha
8 pages
The Nagamani, a serpent jewel that holds fire without burning, could slow the goddess burning inside Nani. It lies in Karkotak's own hall. Aman fights his way to it, and finds a crowded kingdom of children. On the shore, Nani and Padmini fall into the dark together, and stop being only enemies.
Day 4
The Khyak of Bhaktapur
10 pages
Sheltering with a potter's family in Bhaktapur, Aman and Nani meet Bhulu, the house's loudmouth Khyak, who swears that every attic in the Valley gossips with every other. Tonight the gossip says Gurumapa is coming for the children, and the only way to stop him runs up the steps of Nyatapola.
Day 5
Blood of Dashain
10 pages
The salt road out of Bhaktapur leads to a ridge village that knows Aman's face: the butcher who once marched beside the asuras. Now Mahishasura is coming for the goddess inside Nani, and the only man who can hold the ridge is the one the village wants dead. On Dashain, every blessing is paid for in blood.
Day 6
Pashupati Burning
11 pages
Down on the cremation ghats of Pashupati, an old sadhu's ash can cool the goddess in Nani, but every pyre on the river has gone out. One drop of Raktabija, the demon whose every drop of blood becomes another of him, survived Kali's war in the Bagmati. Aman can't hit him without making more. Then Bhairav comes to judge the butcher.
Day 6
Lakhey Night
10 pages
Gurumapa holds Sundarijal, the Valley's last gate north, with every hungry ghost that still serves the old dark: kichkandi, pret, mulkatta. Achedya brings every Lakhe in the Valley to break it open. A Lakhe cannot leave the Valley. So someone has to stay behind and hold the gate.
Day 7
Trishuli Rising
9 pages
Day seven, the last day. In the Trishuli gorge the river is running uphill toward Shiva's lake, and Karkotak comes down it with the whole flood behind him. The water takes Nani. With no one left to stop him, Aman lets the gold rage out, and when it's over, Padmini is lying in the river.
Day 7
Daughter of Serpents
9 pages
Five hours to moonrise and seven hours of mountain. Padmini knows a faster way: the serpent road under the mountain, past her own brothers. In the deepest caves she finds what her father kept from her: the flood that seals the gorge will drown the Naga eggs first. She has to choose. And she tells Aman the one way the Nagamani could save Nani, and what it would cost him.
Day 7
Where Shiva Drank
12 pages
Season 1 finale. Moonrise at Gosaikunda, the lake Shiva made to cool the poison he drank for the world. One man against the yaksha host, Gurumapa and the Naga king, with the dead of the snow valley watching from the ice. The Nagamani can drink a goddess's fire, if someone will hold it to his heart and burn.
Season 2 · The Ramayan · Janakpur and the Terai
The Bow of Janakpur
South to Janakpur, where Sita was born from the earth. The last generals of Ravana's rakshasa army hunt a shard of Shiva's great bow, and Aman must earn the trust of Hanuman himself.
Born of the Furrow
Janakpur. A field that bleeds gold where Sita was found, and rakshasas who have waited a long time for it.
The Broken Bow
A shard of Shiva's bow, the one Ram broke to win Sita, is the key to a door the rakshasas want open.
Hanuman's Test
The mightiest servant of Ram asks one question of Aman. Getting it wrong means fighting him.
Season 3 · The Mahabharat · The eastern hills and the Valley
The Kirat War
The Kirat king Yalambar marched to Kurukshetra and never came home; the Newars still worship his head as Akash Bhairav. His restless army rises, Bhimsen walks the trade roads, and Shiva comes as a hunter to test Aman the way he once tested Arjuna.
The Head on the Pole
Yalambar's legend: a Kirat king who would have fought at Kurukshetra, and the head the Newars still honor as Akash Bhairav.
Bhimsen's Road
The strongest of the Pandavas, worshipped by Newar traders, walks the old salt road. So do the ghosts of a war that never ended.
The Hunter on the Mountain
Shiva, disguised as a Kirata hunter, once fought Arjuna to test him. Now he picks a fight with Aman.
Season 4 · The Puranas · The high Himalaya
The Churning
The asura lords want to churn the ocean again for the nectar of immortality. A war of gods' weapons, serpents and poison, and Aman in the middle of the rope.
Ocean of Milk
The asuras want the Churning again. Gods, demons and one stubborn mortal in a war over immortality.
Halahala
When poison rises from the deep, someone has to swallow it. The last time, it was Shiva.
Season 5 · The Buddha · Lumbini and Kapilavastu
The Road to Lumbini
Mara's armies march on the Buddha's birthplace. Aman meets the story of Angulimala, the killer who found peace, and has to decide whether a man named Peace can ever stop fighting.
Lumbini
Mara's armies reach the garden where the Buddha was born. Aman stands at the gate.
The Finger Necklace
Aman hears the story of Angulimala, the killer who found peace, and doesn't like how familiar it sounds.
One warrior, one lifetime
The Ages of Aman
He never loses his nerve. What changes is everything else. He begins as an arrogant destroyer who solves every problem with a mace, and every season leaves him older, more strategic, and harder to beat.
Season 1 · age 31
The Destroyer
Arrogant, fearless and all force. He wins by breaking whatever is in front of him, and other people pay for it.
Season 2 · age 34
The Student
Three years on. Hanuman shows him that strength given in service beats strength spent on pride. He learns to listen before he swings.
Season 3 · age 39
The General
He leads the dead Kirat army and learns terrain, patience and the price of every order. He wins battles before they start.
Season 4 · age 45
The Scholar-Warrior
He reads the old texts, learns the weapons of the gods, and fights with knowledge as much as with the mace.
Season 5 · age 52
The Sage
Grey in the beard and still unbeaten. The most fearless thing he ever does is put the mace down.
Gods, ghosts and monsters
The Cast
Aman is our own creation. Everyone he meets walks out of the legends of Nepal.
