Seven Days

Taleju is trapped inside Nani and will burn her out in seven days. Follow the road from Kantipur to Gosaikunda, and how far the goddess's gold fire climbed each day.

    Ep 1: The Exile

    • Indra Jatra: Padmini cuts the Kumari's palm.
    • Kanakaksha and Karkotak seal their bargain.
    • Serpents and yakshas rise from the Bagmati.
    • Aman stops hiding; he and Achedya fight the Battle of Durbar Square.
    • Ajima dies; Gurumapa is freed to hunt the exile.

    • Aman carries Nani on his back.
    • Brahmayani tests the former goddess's pride.
    • Nani kneels: "I'm just Nani."
    • Yaksha hunters attack the camp after midnight.

    • Chamunda shows Aman the valley he burned and offers him his rage back.
    • He refuses: "I don't want it."
    • Padmini's ambush; Aman spares her.
    • Gurumapa stalks the villages behind them.

    Karkotak's pond, the last of the old lake

    • Aman defeats Karkotak's champion beneath the water.
    • Nani and Padmini fall into the caves beneath the shore.
    • Karkotak lets the thief go.
    • The Nagamani slows Taleju's fire.

    Day 4 · The Khyak of Bhaktapur

    Thimi and Bhaktapur

    • Bhulu the Khyak hears the attic gossip: Gurumapa is hunting the potter's sons.
    • Aman fights Gurumapa through Pottery Square and up the steps of Nyatapola.
    • Bhulu joins the journey.
    • Far south, Mahishasura wakes.

    A ridge village on the salt road

    • A ridge village recognises Aman as the butcher of the snow valley.
    • Mahishasura's asuras attack at dusk; the old priest dies.
    • Aman's rage nearly kills Kiran before Durga answers through Nani.
    • Dawn of Day 6: eleven pyres and a tika of blood.

    Day 6 · Ghats and Lakhey night

    Pashupati and the Valley's last gate

    • At Pashupati, Gyan Baba's ash quiets the goddess in Nani.
    • Raktabija rises from the Bagmati; Aman burns him on a pyre, and Gyan Baba dies.
    • Bhairav judges Aman: ash over blood.
    • Achedya brings word: Gurumapa holds Sundarijal, the last gate.
    • Lakhey Night: forty Lakhes march with Achedya to Sundarijal against Gurumapa's ghosts.
    • Gurumapa goes over the falls, swearing to wait at the lake.
    • Achedya stays to hold the gate. One by one, the drums stop.

    Day 7 · Flood and the frozen lake

    The Trishuli gorge and Gosaikunda

    • Dawn: out of the Valley at last. The rivers are running north, and Karkotak with them.
    • The Trishuli runs uphill. Karkotak floods the gorge and the Nagas take Nani.
    • Aman opens the gold rage himself; Padmini is struck shielding a Naga child.
    • Moonrise is six hours away. The lake is seven.
    • Padmini leads Aman by the serpent road; the flood would drown the Naga eggs first.
    • Padmini kills her brother Kalinag to save the eggs; Bhulu stays with her.
    • The Nagamani can drink Nani's fire, if someone burns with it. Aman will.
    • Moonrise at Gosaikunda: Aman refuses to kneel to Kanakaksha.
    • Gurumapa goes under the ice. Padmini turns her father with a single egg.
    • Aman holds the Nagamani to his heart and drinks Taleju's fire; Kanakaksha breaks into gold dust.
    • Aman walks into the lake. The dead of the snow valley carry him out. Bhairav: living is the harder sentence.
    • Day 8, dawn: Nani is free, the rivers run downhill, and the fields of Janakpur bleed gold.
